Michigan Sports Betting Adds Three More Locations Via Four Winds Casinos

Michigan sports betting has launched at three tribal casinos just minutes from Indiana.

The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, who own and operate Four Winds Casinos, announced Monday customers can begin placing bets at all three of their properties in Michigan.

In partnership with the Kambi Group, guests at New Buffalo, Dowagiac and Hartford can now place wagers as the return of sports begins to pick up.

Here is what Frank Freedman, chief operating officer of Four Winds Casino had to say:

“The Pokagon Band and its Four Winds Casinos continually strive to exceed expectations and enhance the entertainment experience of our guests. We feel the Four Winds Sportsbook will add an additional level of excitement sports enthusiasts have been looking for.”

Geography is key for these new MI sports betting locations

The three properties are in a unique position being so close to the Indiana border. Guests in southern Michigan no longer have to make the trek to Detroit’s commercial casinos or venture over to Horseshoe Casino or Ameristar in Hammond, IN, to place bets.

According to Freedman, guests will have immediate access to a number of self-serving kiosks at all three locations.

  • New Buffalo — 18 kiosks
  • Dowagiac — 6 kiosks
  • Hartford — 6 kiosks

In order to make the process faster, guests can build a list of bets from home, travel to the casino, scan a QR code which populates on their phone, then place the bets at a teller window.

Although these locations are retail only, online sports betting in Michigan is currently in the works. The powers that be are anticipating a late 2020 launch for mobile wagering. However, since tribal properties do not fall under the jurisdiction of the Michigan Gaming Control Board, it’s unknown when online sports betting will make its way to tribal properties.

Second tribal sportsbook to launch in Michigan

According to PlayMichigan, The Pokagon Band of Indians are the second tribe to launch sports betting behind the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi.

FireKeepers Casino in Battle Creek is owned and operated by the Nottawaseppi and began accepting wagers on June 22.

Relaunch of team sports and casino reopenings

Four Winds Casinos closed their properties back in March due to the coronavirus pandemic. But they, along with a number of other properties around the US, have slowly begun to reopen. Additionally, with the relaunch of sports, launching sports betting could not arrive at a better time.

  • NBA will relaunch in Orlando Florida.
  • NHL will resume in Toronto and Edmonton.
  • MLB will play a 60-game season.
  • NFL has yet to release a plan.
  • NCAA football will potentially shift to a conference-only schedule.
